At the end of day 1, the committee decided we'd all be going to Milk Hill for the next day and maybe move camps to that area. As I live halfway between Crickhowell and Milk, I packed away the 'big top' tent and spent the night at home. Next morning 'Mike, Mike, the committee changed their minds. We're off to Magic! ' was the message from Peggy and Frazer. 'We're off at 8:30! ' 5 Minutes to get the stuff in the car and 1hr 20 mins later I arrive at the school car park in Crick.
Got a lift up to Magic with Ali, and then started the walk up. It's long. Very long! Probably about 3 or 4km. All up hill. We arrived at take-off and were cooled by a 7 to 10mph breeze and hurried to a gathering by a rallying call to briefing; I remember thinking to myself 'I'll never walk up a hill like this again! '
Immediately after the briefing finished, the first pilots launched, people soared, gaggles formed and set off, looking to fly to Crewe and beyond. Lift seemed abundant, but within 15 mins the breeze dropped and conditions became more challenging.
I managed to get a late 1 to 2m/s climb out with Scott and Simon, but only made it to the ridge behind. Down, tired, depressed and cursing the day, I watched as the others ridge-soared for a bit before landing. Cursing even more, I then walked up. Again! 1hr 30 mins later, having watched the helicopters come and go, I took off again. Struggling to climb higher than 2,300ft, I finally managed to get to base and do another 20 km.
Met Gary H trying to hitch. He had landed in the same field some 30 mins earlier. By the time I'd finished packing up he'd managed to get a lift. I put the 'I'm a pilot' banner on my glider bag, and within two minutes a VW camper pulled over next to me. "We can't give you a lift, but we wanted to share our video of you landing! " This was surreal. We chatted about flying, exchanged numbers so they could send me the pics and video, and just before they left they showed me the video. It wasn't even me! I thought it was Gary. Turns out it wasn't him either! The mystery glider. I didn't have the heart to tell the family it wasn't me, I just smiled and nodded.
Anyone on a red wing land near me and wants some low save video?
Just about sums up my luck for the day. Not big distance, but a truly odd, yet great experience!
