Another day, same forecast as the day before but more clouds for us, and it was harder.
2nd attempt off tow today, had to search down wind to find a climb, 1 pilot before me well and truly established a good 1000ft or more higher, Never did catch them but got a climb up with minimal drift.
Bill launched next, and pushed in to wind a little off tow and caught a stronger core, at around 1200ft for me I could see Bill climbing stronger but a dared not try and push up wind to meet him, eventually our thermals merged and we climber together, with Bill always having a 300ft or so advantage in height. As Bill continued to climb to 3000ft I seemed to fall out the bottom of it around 2700ft I couldn't find a thing, so pushed back up wind back to the field where the next glider was starting to climb. Unfortunately the lower glider lost the thermal or it just didn't materialise, and Bill had dropped back to my height at around 2500 ft so we worked together.
When the climbs weakened I pushed on and Bill tended to stop and climb higher, Pushing on seemed to be the best option as inevitable, I would find the next climb first climb and be higher than Bill after he transitioned to me. This was the nature of the day for the rest of the flight. Round 40km and after passing Old Buckenham ATZ to the north, I got a head of Bill about 2km, and noticed him on flarm lowish, I hung around at around 4000 mincing in weak choppy stuff trying to maintain, but it wasn't very pleasant air at that height, but easy to stay high.
Bill dissappear on flarm so assumed he landed and I couldn't get a visual on him so I started to push on, eventually he reappereared so I pushed back upwind to meet him and fly together again, I got drilled getting to him luckily he found a climb which I then came in under him and climbed together, but I just couldn't get established and up to his height. After struggling I decided to make a punt down wind as top cover was coming in from the North quickly shutting things down. I didn't really connect with anything, Bill probably had enough height to make something more but decided to land with me.
I wasn't too disappointed as I was tired and aching from the day before. Great retrieve from the farm owner to Diss train station and Bus from Norwich to Dereham where we got picked up by Martin to take us back to the field. Martin also had a good flight and joined us at Old Buckenham on his Tandem.
Another great Day for Norfolk.
