Best laid plans.
Drove down to Pewsey stn with Dave and Luke having booked the 9:40 Wiltshire Connect bus. Met others at the bus stop, then dropped off at Golden Ball car park. The plan was to go XC and return to Pewsey - easy!
Arrived around 10:20, greeted by the sight of loads of people already flying. A brisk walk to take off and a rush to get ready as it seemed the day had kicked off early. There were scores of pilots. 60 or 70 at least. A quick chat to sort the task for the day then stand ready to launch.
Winds were southerly, but stronger than forecast, making take off a challenge. Once in the air the next challenge was how to avoid what felt like hundreds of wings. The air seemed reasonably buoyant, with scattered groups of pilots desperately keen to get away. The first gaggle seemed to be leaving in zeros so I headed back to the melee. Some time later a smaller gaggle which included Alex, Luke and myself, went over the back at base having climbed in a steady 1.5 up. We pushed on from cloudbase toward South Cerney, Alex in front pushing on low. The occasional 2 up kept us high and by the time we arrived at the lakes we could see the remnants of the first gaggle.
The groups merged, but quickly split up in the light conditions. 5 of us broke away and turned toward Cheltenham, where a line of showers kept us well east of the town. Our group of 5 split once more when conditions dulled, with Ollie and Alex hunting for a saving climb closer to the squall line. Kirsty, Steve and myself dived in low below them after they found a screamer, and we all scratched our way back to a reasonable height.
The sky off to our right always looked more promising. The bit of sky that was off limits due to airspace. Our last 'ye ha' was a good climb on the edge of airspace which was then followed by very little lift. We landed together 5km short of Redditch, my goal.
Ollie, Kirsty and I enjoyed a beer at Purity Brewery, and an Uber taxi who had fortuitously just dropped off in the area. The bad news was the cancellation of afternoon trains to Pewsey. Ho hum!
