Notes

Climb and Speed averaged over 10 second intervals.

These values may be lower than those shown by a flight instrument, which has access to continuous raw data.

Average Speed around course is measured from Start to Finish points.

Track Length is the cumulative distance between track points from Takeoff to Landing.

The sky didn't look classic on the drive over to Frocester, but there were promising signs upwind. Stronger winds from midday were my chief concern and although the forecasts differed, a brisk wind was the common theme.

I arrived early, going straight to the point to check the wind - WSW to SW at 6 to 8 mph already. The modellers were already flying. I'm always nervous when there's any notable southerly component, but Alex provided a plausible précis of the situation that eased my concerns.

The crowds arrived in numbers, filling the set up areas, accompanied by increasing wind strength. With blustery conditions on take off Frocester can be an intimidating site as the launch area is quite limited, and the barbed fence lurks menacingly only a few metres away. I was already somewhat flustered and the strengthening breeze made for a nervy take off.

The first reasonable climb and a crispy red Zeno, Alex, Tom, and I wasted no time in getting away. But this was to be the only time we would work together as once high we split up and never really got back together.

Thermals low down were broken, but once established were consistent 2 m/s climbs often to base. Clouds were regular but not always active meaning glides between thermals were at times quite long. I watched the others zigzag this way and that as we all struggled to find a good line, but it wasn't to be our day.

A nice flight, but not an enjoyable one. I suspect I never really shook off the tension from take off. More GH needed me thinks.

Retrieve was pretty straightforward, but with a pleasant twist. The driver of the taxi service to Charlbury arrived in an exec Merc, helped me with my wing, and opened and closed the door for me. Never had that before. Now that's service! Apparently Lewis Hamilton was their most famous passenger. Until now.
