Currently, no other story entries for the day so I thought I'd enter my first one. The day started with much umming and ahing about where to go. I was 'worried' (first-world problem! ) Combe may get breezy and the stiff northerly would make cross-winding around Southampton airspace tricky. Some friends were going to Selsley but was worried it may be too northerly for this NW site until later, so settled on good old Westbury.

There was a good turnout at the Bratton take-off and after waiting for the thermic conditions to get going, I lobbed off. Following a bit of to-ing and fro-ing and I found myself thermalling deep into the quarry airspace concession at around 3,500'. It still felt a little bit early to go XC as RASP indicated a later thermic day and there was nobody else up with me to fly XC but decided not to squander the opportunity - I've learnt from bitter experience not to assume you'll get another chance so went for it. I avoided being a 'Warminster Wally' (a less polite noun also available) by not bombing out - I've decked it just past there on a couple of previous occasions.

The thermals now seemed very broken with punchy, promising climbs disappearing quicker than a rat up a drainpipe and there appeared to be an inversion around 3,000'. The day seemed to finally improve around 14:00 and I reached my favourite, happy place - cloudbase. Next issue was Compton Abbas ATZ, whose centre I was helpfully drifting straight towards. Go left, go right, go left, go right? Decided on left as there were some juicy looking clouds on the left edge. Found a consistent climb right on the rim of the ATZ with my Flymaster and XCTrack airspace alarms all enthusiastically doing their best to distract me from thermalling while I drifted into the circle but was now above the 2,800' airspace (the airfield is on top of a hill! )

My goal at Wareham was now starting to look doable and a dark bottomed cloud on route was optimistically approached but it turned out to be a big tease and offered me very little despite a stream of bad language aimed at it to try and change its mind. Decked it a few miles short of goal and hitched a lift to Wareham station from an Afghanistan veteran who shared his PTSD woes (poor chap). Two trains and home to Petersfield by 21:00.
