Climb and Speed averaged over 4 second intervals.

These values may be lower than those shown by a flight instrument, which has access to continuous raw data.

Average Speed around course is measured from Start to Finish points.

Track Length is the cumulative distance between track points from Takeoff to Landing.

Feeling a bit grim with a cold and a sore eye, I considered going back to bed, especially as the forecast had deteriorated a bit, and it was solidly overcast. But I drove over to the Gibbet to see several flying, although several more sitting out the strong breeze. The sitter-outers' wisdom was confirmed when a Zeno got dragged trying to launch, and a B got dragged into the barbed-wire fence trying to land.

A long spell of parawaiting continued even after I clipped in, although there were always a few in the air and high. Eventually I launched into a prolonged lull, and was happily boating about when Phil Clark flew alongside me and very calmly told me that I had a huge knot in my lines. The deformation of the wing was huge, though it hadn't stopped me climbing - a tribute to the robustness of the wing's design, and to my own insensitivity.

I was able to climb to a decent height out front, and after a series of huge yanks on various lines, the knot came out - just in tie for a lovely climb-out with Phil and another above us. It took me steadily to a very cold 5,000 feet, with the other two choosing to head back to the hill. I headed downwind, now seeing Helen Barnes making progress below me. I kept an eye on her to exploit any climb that she found, but lost sight of her before Andover, at the same time finding a bit of a thermal of my own.

With the wind close to north, I headed down the Test valley, thinking that in the unlikely event of the flight continuing for several hours, I could turn west when the need arose. I thought I was landing before Stockbridge, but another steady climb got me back over 3,000. Now I crossed the river to the west, both to be heading for clear airspace and to avoid the boggy valley bottom. The day was fading away, and I turned into wind once the distance had ticked over 40k.

I knew I was well short of Romsey, but I'd forgotten about Mottisfont and Dunbridge station, which was little more than a mile away. I arrived there in time for a train to Salisbury and then to Andover, from where a friendly but not cheap taxi driver took me back to the hill.
