Climb and Speed averaged over 4 second intervals.

These values may be lower than those shown by a flight instrument, which has access to continuous raw data.

Red values indicate suspect data, because the tracklog contains invalid points.

Metric units are used for all chart data, except for Height which is shown in feet.

I set myself 5-6 goals for the season every year, to push myself a bit and check progress. One for this year was Flight to a Declared Goal. So it was a nice surprise to tick that one off on the first flight of the season, from Mere to Bathhampton. It's just 32km open distance but took me 2,5 hours. It didn't start well, I got very low in the bowl and was kicking bushtops for a moment before a gust saved me. The first hour was spent over the Rifle Range Bowl slowly building height to 4000'. There were a few other pilots about which helped, but it wasn't busy. Then onto glide, on my own as usual. The 2nd climb was at Horningsham, from 2500 up to 4750 which was cloudbase. There is a good pub at Horningsham (Bath Arms) so I wouldn't mind bombing out there, but I was happy to be going up so close to Longleat as I'm not certain if its safer to land in with the lions, monkeys or rhinos? Over Frome it was getting easy to find lift so stayed around 4000'. Then just after Beckington I hit prolonged sink, like minus 4m/s for minutes it seemed. I finally found another climb out at Norton St. Philip (where there's another tempting pub) but the climb was taking me past 3000' and straight toward the airspace that is 3500' over Bath, so I had to leave the climb and weave down the side of it, staying east of the University. The view of Bath is spectacular as it sits surrounded by hills, with rivers and canals and of course classic architecture. It's a sight well worth seeing. Theres lots of green fields out to the East so plenty of landing options. I had set my goal as the King Edwards rugby pitches, Bathhampton, which I had spied previously noting that its across the road from a great pub, The George, which sits on the canal. But maddingly the air suddenly got very lifty over Bathhampton. And rather rough. It was a sunny day and I guess thermals were coming off the town. I tagged my goal in the air (thats all you need to do to claim it) but I was going up not down so I carried on for a bit, waiting for sink. But I was kind of stuck at 3000'. I wasn't sure what to do. I went over to check on Colerne Airfield. I waited but it didn't change. It was windy up there too, I needed bar to push into wind. It took me half an hour to get down, eventually I had to do spirals over Solsbury Hill. I know how Peter Gabriel felt. My heart was going Boom boom boom. But there was no wind below 300 feet, thus got a smooth landing on a huge freshly mown pitch. So mission accomplished I got myself over to The George for my precious pint. Simon Fouracre had also made the XC from Mere and managed to catch a bus & joined me just as my faithful wife arrived to share another pint & drive us back to Mere. I would happily do that flight again anytime.
