Notes

Climb and Speed averaged over 4 second intervals.

These values may be lower than those shown by a flight instrument, which has access to continuous raw data.

Average Speed around course is measured from Start to Finish points.

Track Length is the cumulative distance between track points from Takeoff to Landing.

You can change the default units displayed - see the Options page.

Drove up to the Malverns with Ash, James and Adam with the sky looking increasingly good as we got closer. Cumulus were developing to the north earlier with the good conditions creeping to the Malverns.

There was a reasonable wind from the north east on take off with plenty of pilots rigged before we arrived. As we got ready a few pilots were starting to get off the hill and were easily maintaining height with a group of good pilots heading over the back and then to the north.

We met Jonny Fox on launch and planned a 100km+ triangle with the turn points broadly in a similar direction to the 130km task that others had.

I followed James into the air with the others joining shortly after. It was fairly easy maintaining height but none of the climbs seems that consistent or to be getting to height. After 10 minutes or so we all found a good climb and headed north.

By this time the conditions had developed a bit with all of the obvious clouds working well. The wind was stronger than predicted with the first leg being into wind which made it feel quite slow. The gaggle we set off with slowly separated and by the first turn point Adam and I were together with James slightly behind.

Adam and I tagged the first turn point and headed cross wind to the north of Kidderminster under a large cloud but with quite a lot of shade on the ground. Fortunately the cloud was working well. We then headed ESE cross wind towards our second turn point.

Throughout the flight we deviated from course line quite a lot to good looking clouds that always worked well but were not the most efficient line. This felt especially true on the second leg.

After tagging the second turn point Adam and I were low over Alcester where we flew over industrial estates but only found a relatively weak climb. Taking this climb to around 600m it seemed to fade away and we decided to push over some brown fields on course line to the west of the town.

Arriving at the fields we were low and I got down to around 180m AGL before finding a sniff of a climb. Unfortunately Adam didn't quite connect with the climb and the extra couple of metres I had allowed me to drift with the climb whilst it improved and continue on whilst Adam landed.

Now towards the end of the day the nice looking clouds had been replaced with scrappy remains far apart. The low save put me in the right frame of mind for patience and slow progress. Fortunately the last leg was downwind ish so taking even weak climbs would put me closer goal.

With limited signs from the clouds I chose some ground sources that looked good and luckily I ran into several weak but consistent climbs that look me back up to around 1000m each time. Every climb the Malverns got closer and closer with my glide to goal and turnpoint arrival height becoming more and more positive. The last climb I took was even pointed directly at goal which was refreshing given the rest of the flight!

Once I had a safe margin over the required glide to goal I left the now disappearing climb I was in and headed back to the Malverns. I arrived in goal at about 200m AGL in the evening shade of the beacon (thank you to James C for reminding me to set the start/finish cylinder away from take off at the last minute! ). The town was working which allowed me to climb back up to hill height after some searching around and land on top.

Great day out flying with everyone and very pleased with my first 100km FAI, albeit a very slow one!
