A very nice flight from Hundred House in round two of the BCC. Lots of teams on the hill with nearly 100 pilots with a fair mix of ability. The day took a while to get going and we had very little meteo wind on the hill, just thermals starting to pull through. It made for some challenging flying at times with everyone trying to climb out but quite a few managed it albeit with several slope landings and lots of huffing and puffing back up the hill.
I took off into a decent cycle and pushed out the front to a small gaggle climbing well. Quite a strong climb which took us all the way to base at 5000' and then into the cloud! Big ears and bar got me out and as I was over the back of the hill with nice clouds ahead I just carried on but unfortunately on my own.
I had good clouds ahead towards Brecon so just kept pushing on as there seemed to be very little wind at height and virtually no drift. Some of the climbs were quite strong and punchy and others very weak so a bit of a mix of a day, quite odd.
There was a lovely climb over Brecon but I couldn't get high enough to take the leap of faith over Pen Y Fan and as I could see the sea breeze in the distance opted to turn left towards Talybont On Usk. In hindsight I probably should have stayed a bit longer trying to work the higher ground but I didn't fancy getting stuck by the reservoir so flew down the valley, finding some lovely smooth air but it wasn't really going up. Gerry came and joined me but neither of us could make much of it so landed just a couple of fields apart.
Packed up and walked into the village where we joined the North Devon team at the pub for celebratory beer, cider and crisps. Ant was an absolute star and came out to retrieve us all.
Another grand day out!
The only really sad thing was I was knocked over on take off by another pilot and my Gopro got switched on. When I climbed out and switched it on as usual I was actually switching it off so I haven't got my usual lovely photographic record of the day which is really sad as the clouds were wonderful.
