Very quick flight out from Golden Ball at mid day. Overcast but a strongish thermal takes us up to 2,000ft and over the back. There were four in the gaggle and two returned to the hill leaving me and Bryan Regan. Over the back small patches of around but spent most of the time in 1s and 0s with the odd bit of lumpy air thrown in. Mostly flew down the Ffield Down and Hackpen hill. Bryan left me and headed over to some others at Avebury. I carried on in a good climb but broke up near 3,000ft. I couldn't find another thermal a no cumulus so headed over to Broad Hinton which is sometimes reliable but lots of sinky air. I landed at the road back to Avebury.

Interesting retrieve story yesterday from a short flight landing at Broad Hinton. After 10 minutes of trying to get lifts an estate car stopped. It looked a bit of a bashed up car but as I got closer inside I could see three men, swarthy types and a bit hippy, they shout out "we're only going to Avebury if that helps", my thoughts there is a surprise 🙂 I drop the glider in the boot, then the immediate thought goes round my head of now they might zoom of without me, I hurry and jump in the back next to a guy holding three beer cans. The man in the back very politely introduces all three men as if they were all part of some gang. Then asks "do you wanna beer", "no thanks" I reply "going to fly later". He quickly laughs and says "yea man we've been flying all day", owing to the smell and smoke inside the car it was still going on. Anyway its only 5 mins down the road what could possibly go wrong. So the car then starts weaving around and at one point I thought this isn't going to end well. I fly a risky sport but hadn't bargained on leaving the earth in a retrieve vehicle. So trying to keep the driver focussed on ther road he then announces "if the fuzz come along we've all to duck down", omg what on earth have I done. I ask where are you all from, "Swindon", "Chippingham" and another place I didn't know, "getting away from Swindon for the day" he says. I reply "really that bad eh! ", "yeah man but Avebury is a nice place to hang out", he said in a cheery kind of way. "Do you know the name Swindon, where it comes from", "no" I reply, "Swine dun, it means pig hill". Then proceeded to give me a history lesson… Quite surreal really.

So we arrive at Avebury and they are looking for parking and we stop. I get out and collect the kit as the guys stagger out of the car and I was thinking this was a lucky escape. However I also thought how nice these guys had been and yes perhaps a bit stereotyped but really really nice fellas… Avebury just a little odd and retrieves always an adventure.
