Another day when I hadn't intended to go flying! After a rubbish day on Combe G the day before, hopping and skipping about in nil wind and occasional thermals, I really was uninspired about going out. A phone call to Peggy changed all that "we're all going, come on, we'll see you there". Scrabbled my stuff together and off I went.
After parking the cars Mike Coupe and I walked out together watching Carlo, Rich Osborne and Nancy climb out and it didn't look particularly easy. Windy and thermic on take off, a real pick your moment day. Two side landings later and I managed a climb out with Peggy, Simon Vacher and a couple of others. Quite a bit of lift around, the trick was piecing it together. Gliders ahead, below (at times) and catching me up. I was trying to fly steadily and consistently and, never having flown that route before, make sure I stayed out of the airspace.
Mike Coupe caught me up and passed me (I did wave Mike) and went on to do over 200k with several others - brilliant flying guys.
A couple of lowish saves later, caught up with Simon and Peggy and we flew together for a bit but parted company towards Oxford, I think Simon said he spotted a nice pub!
I found a fairish climb under a decent cloud but got a bit over excited, left it too early and then found nothing on the glide towards the clouds over Oxford. Arrived there a bit too low to be confident of making it over the city easily. I did find a climb but was worried about losing it so chickened out and glided out to safer landing options. I might have been OK but didn't want to land in built up areas, given that it was quite windy and I'm very nervous about being downwind of rotory things!
2 lessons learned:
1. With a tricky area to cross always stay with the lift.
2. Don't go dashing off on glide to stuff that might not be within reach.
All in all a great flight in first class company and my PB to date - hopefully more to come.
Ps I had my radio on in flight and could hear Tim P at times and also what turned out to be Carl Wallbank talking to his retrieve driver on his way to breaking the HG record.
